Time Traveler in Green Apple Book Store
A visit to Clement Street is incomplete without stepping inside Green Apple Books which is where I saw this lady dressed in a compelling retro outfit casually browsing through books. She stood out from the rest of us, and I wanted to capture how conspicuous she looked in her vintage riding breeches, waistcoat and a bowler hat, but also blended seamlessly with the timeless ambiance of the old bookstore with its creaky stairs and dusty used books.

Cannoli at Cavalli Café
There is no better way to spend a leisurely afternoon than reading a good book while enjoying a scrumptious cannoli; its crispy shell filled with fresh ricotta and chocolate chips, topped with a strip of candied orange peel was as delightful to eat as it was to draw. Cavalli Café is also perfect for people-watching, especially with a bus stop nearby where I spotted this woman and her partner—he in a pink shirt and a feathered hat—waiting for their ride.

Blue Haired lady in North Beach
While waiting to cross the busy Columbus Avenue, I saw this very poised, faux leather coat clad lady pass by. She cut a striking figure with her high cheekbones, piercing eyes and perfectly coiffed blue hair that was blowing in the wind. This drawing is a snapshot of her on that sunny day against the ever colorful and busy North Beach backdrop.

Drawing the Bridge
Drawing the Golden Gate Bridge while sitting on it is a unique experience. It was almost sunset, and the mist was starting to roll in. I found the perfect spot on the pedestrian walkway, settled with my sketchbook and crayons, and began looking for an interesting subject when this person caught my eye or her shirt did.
Farmers’ Market at Ferry Building
This illustration captures my impression of the beloved farmers’ market at San Francisco’s Ferry Building, that bursts into a riot of colors and activity every Saturday morning. Beneath a sea of canopies and tents, I saw people leaning over crates piled with fresh produce - plump squashes, juicy eggplants, and purple beets. The lady in the foreground standing by the crate of torpedo onions, was cradling a baby romaine in her hand, perhaps contemplating a crunchy salad for lunch.

Busy Fillmore Street
This portion of Fillmore Street between Filbert and Union, has a few classic Victorian houses which I love to admire when I pass by. One time I saw this lady in a pink jacket with matching shoes posing for pictures right in the middle of the busy street. She was carrying a leather purse and a black furry slightly distraught little dog on her arm that kept barking at the photographer.

Spring in Nob Hill
A self-guided Nob Hill walking tour brought me to this peaceful corner on Leroy Place. As I was taking in the quiet alley lined with Ficus and bottlebrush trees, this gentleman entered the scene carrying a tote bag full of produce and a vase of fresh flowers. He looked out of breath, his face flushed, probably from a walk back from the farmers’ market.
Weekend Crowd at Caffe Greco
This is one of many sketches I’ve done at Greco. I never tire of coming here—the place is packed with tourists and locals alike, ordering espressos with biscotti or gathered around tables, chatting and sharing gelatos. When the atmosphere is as vibrant and lively as it was that day, sketching feels effortless. You just pick up the pencil, and your hand moves on its own, driven by the buzz and energy of the space.
Slice of North Beach
I spotted this stylish lady in striped pants and tinted sunglasses stepping out of City Lights Bookstore with a SF MOMA tote bag slung over on her shoulder bulging with books. Behind her the iconic Transamerica Pyramid, Sentinel building, the historic Vesuvio Café, along with a cluster of small hotels, bakeries, restaurants and a quirky store with Palm and Tarot Card Readings sign, framed the scene.

Outside Mario’s Cigar Café
North Beach festival attracts a lot of revelers, some strikingly dressed, and this was one of them, in a yellow beret, plaid bouclé coat and pink and blue tinted sunglasses. I was heading towards the food trucks, when I saw her standing on the pavement outside Mario’s Cigar Store, taking a bottle of wine out of her tote bag for a midday swig, maybe.

Historic Café Trieste
Once a hangout for Beat writers in the 50s and 60s, this iconic coffee shop has plenty to catch your eye—vintage photos on walls, an antique jukebox, a stucco mural and even an old phone booth. But on my first visit, this is the scene I decided to capture: regulars enjoying a sunny afternoon, chatting, sipping espresso, and occasionally working—maybe on a screenplay or a painting—in a space as cozy and familiar as their own living rooms.
Inside Muni
I take the bus everywhere and have observed some very interesting characters on my rides around the city like this lady in a green plaid coat, stylish sunglasses and a bold cherry red lipstick. It was peak office hours, and she was carrying a heavy backpack in one hand while gripping the handrail with the other. She looked both effortlessly put together and totally unflappable.
